Search Engine Optimization or SEO is the process of Optimizing a Website for Search Engines such as Google & Yahoo. It involves adding Titles, Meta Tags, Key Words & Key Phrases, Descriptions, Alt tags or Alt Attributes and Cleaning up your code.

Every page in your website should have an appropriate and unique title. The titles should be relevant to the content of that particular page. For instance, for this page the title is:

Meta Tags

Meta Tags are a script that works behind the scenes. The Search Engine Robots read these tags, and it helps them to understand what your website is about, and how relevant your website is to the words that someone has typed into the search engine.

Key Words & Key Phrases

Key words and Key Prases should be used in the titles, meta tags, links and throughout the written content of your website.

Description Tag

The Description Tag is a breif descriptiong of what your business is. It will be what apears in the result pages of Search Engines. It can be up to 250 words, but around 30 words is best.

Alt Tags

Add Alt Tags for all the images displayed in your website. The tags should mirror the keyword & keyphrases used in the Description Tag, Key Words Tag, & Title. This reinforces what your website is about to search engines as well as makes your website more accessible to users that may be visually impared.

Cleaning up your Code

When your website is done and ready to go online, and before your website is submitted to your search engines, the code needs to be cleaned up. This includes removing redundant tags, adding styles to the head of the document, or creating an external style sheet, making sure each page has a title, & validating your code.
